Job Description

The Director of Automation and Special Projects is charged with leading the organization in research and development of new products, product enhancements and product redesign. It is a high-profile position, involving extensive research and plan design to ensure the best possible solution to meet our automation needs. This role is responsible for evaluating the potential and practicality of products in development relying on extensive personal experience and judgment to accomplish established goals.


  • Oversees research and development for all future product development.
  • Provides oversight, delivery and support of all custom products and initiatives.
  • Leads creative sessions for project kick-offs; often charged with the task of designing unique solutions.
  • Selects best possible design concept(s) and fundamental technology used for new products or improvement for existing.
  • Develops and manages vendor relationships.
  • Creates, develops, integrates and manages schedule for timely product delivery.
  • Maintains an up to date knowledge base of emerging technologies and how those technologies would fit in with our automated systems.
  • Collaborates with the sales team on development of customer specific product development.
  • Collaborates with the procurement team on development and deployment of all custom products to ensure that we are creating sustainable processes and lasting products.
  • Develops best practices for communication between Innovation and Event Technologies field and supervisory staff, including notification of project status, advanced property visit notification, and effective communication of all projects that may hold any effect on the Event Technologies staff.
  • Performs product surveys; including hardware, software and custom fabrication needs.
  • Participates dynamically in the quotation process.
  • Provides consistent communication to account executive relating to project developments and progress.
  • Manages project budget for increased revenue and control expenses effectively, including labor. Process all project related expenses within a timely manner.
  • Establish strategic service provider partnerships and maintain on-going relations.
  • Work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders as required for creation and deployment of digital products and services.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of productive business relationships with identified key customers to represent our innovation, differentiation and technology.
  • Maintain communication with Stage Rigging’s Operations department, to include face to face meetings and weekly calls to share, manage, and support our ongoing technology initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and products relevant to the theatrical automation industry.
  • Engage with appropriate technology teams across the enterprise for awareness, expertise, collaboration and leverage.
  • Create and maintain the Company’s automation technology business strategy.
  • Manages proprietary products and services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Design or related field from a four-year college or university or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in product creation and delivery, technology delivery, customer facing responsibilities and business development.
  • Previous experience with Programmable Logic Controls
  • Strong technical aptitude
